April Showers Bring May Flowers (and Maybe Floods) | Hortica ...

The flood of 1889 in Johnstown, PA ? which took 2,200 lives ? is one of many deadly floods the U.S. has seen. Several days of extremely heavy rainfall led to the collapse of the South Fork Dam, which was 14 miles upstream of Johnstown. This was the first disaster relief effort that was handled by the new American Red Cross. Since this natural disaster, The Mississippi Valley, Ohio River and other geographical regions have suffered from floods that have destroyed families, homes and businesses.

Floods are among the more common global hazards and can come in the form of a flash flood or a flood that that results from accumulating rain over a period of days. Flash floods often form a dangerous wall of roaring water that carries mud, rocks and other debris. Regardless of where you live, it?s important to be wary of floods, especially in low-lying areas near water. Are you unsure of the flood risk where you live? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has an answer.
