NYC auction house to offer Warhol works online

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City auction house will offer an online auction of Andy Warhol's works, giving a broader audience the chance to own a piece of his art.

It's Christie's first online-only Warhol sale. About 125 paintings, drawings, photographs and prints will be offered from Feb. 26 through March 5. Pre-sale estimates range from $600 to $70,000.

The auction is being held in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The works can be previewed online prior to the sale.

Bidders can browse, bid and receive instant updates by email or phone if another bid exceeds theirs.

Christie's and the foundation entered the partnership last fall.

The first live auction raised $17 million for the Warhol Foundation's endowment.

(AP) ? Toyota is recalling over one million cars around the world for faulty air bags and defective windshield wipers.

The move comes just days after Toyota regained its spot as the world's No. 1 automaker from U.S. rival General Motors Co., with global vehicle sales that climbed to a record 9.748 million vehicles. The company is now recalling 907,000 cars, mostly Corollas, due to air bags that can improperly inflate when the vehicle's electronic signals damage a chip in the part that controls the air bags. It also is recalling 385,000 Lexus IS luxury cars with wipers that can get stuck if there is heavy snowfall.

Initially, the Japanese automaker had said there were no accidents related to either problem, but Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Naoto Fuse said Wednesday that two crashes were reported in the U.S. related to the air bag problem. Toyota had not been able to confirm them and Fuse said it is unclear whether anyone was injured in the two crashes. Toyota has confirmed 18 cases in the U.S. of abrasion-type injuries from the air bag problem, he said. In total, the automaker has received 46 reports of problems involving the air bags from North America, and one from Japan, and 25 reports of problems related to the windshield wipers.

As part of the air bag recall, Toyota is recalling some 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars in the U.S., about 141,000 vehicles in Canada and thousands of similar vehicles in Japan and Mexico that were manufactured between December 2001 and May 2004. The part will be corrected to be able to block damaging signals, said Fuse.

The problem wipers affect three kinds of Lexus IS models, manufactured from May 2005 to October 2011, including 270,000 vehicles in the U.S. and nearly 17,000 vehicles in Canada. The recall also affects the Lexus IS sold in Europe, the Middle East and China, Toyota said.

Toyota's reputation for top quality has been undermined in the past few years by massive recalls for a spate of problems, including bad brakes, gas pedals and floor mats, mostly in the U.S. Executives have repeatedly promised to beef up quality controls and be quicker with recalls to repair Toyota's image. Toyota has announced some recalls in recent months, but they have been relatively minor, such as floor mats, and generally affect vehicles manufactured before its latest efforts to regain sterling quality.

Last month, Toyota agreed to pay more than $1 billion in the U.S. to settle lawsuits where vehicle owners said the value of their cars and SUVs plummeted after the company recalled millions of vehicles because of sudden-acceleration issues. Executives say they are not admitting fault. But they acknowledge the company is eager to put the recall crisis behind it.

Toyota's production was hit by the quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan in 2011, where key suppliers were located, but it has since recovered, seeing sales grow not only in the U.S. but also in Asia.

NTSB doing detailed analysis of damaged Boeing 787 battery

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday said it was continuing to investigate a January 7 battery fire on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner at Boston airport, and had shifted into a more detailed, microscopic examination of the damaged battery.

It said experts at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center laboratories were looking at the second, undamaged battery pulled from the same plane for signs of in-service damage and manufacturing defects.

The safety board said Boeing was providing pertinent fleet information about its 787 airliners, which will help investigators understand the operating history of lithium-ion batteries on those airplanes.

(AP Photo/Gus Ruelas, File)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Tony Scott earned millions directing films such as "Man on Fire" and "Unstoppable" and the agents who helped negotiate those deals are now seeking more than a $1 million in unpaid commissions from his estate.

Creative Artists Agency filed a creditor's claim Monday for its 10 percent share of several of Scott's projects since 2004, court records show.

The director of action and thriller films such as "Top Gun," ''Days of Thunder" and "Crimson Tide" died in August after leaping from a towering bridge over Los Angeles' harbor. His estate was valued at $1.25 million in a September court filing, and the lawyer handling the case declined through a secretary to discuss the agents' claims on Wednesday.

CAA's filing reveals some of the pay days that Scott was able to command in recent years, including $10 million for 2006's "Deja Vu" and $9.5 million for directing "The Taking of Pelham 123." The filings also state that 2004's "Man on Fire" earned Scott a $7 million fee for directing and an additional $1 million for producing, although CAA is only seeking $70,000 from recent residual payments.

The 2010 film "Unstoppable" earned $4.5 million, according to the documents.

Scott's death was ruled a suicide, but notes he left behind offered no motive for why he killed himself.

CAA's filing states that it may be owed additional payments

Scott's estate is meant to provide for his widow, Donna, and their twin sons.

Boeing 787 battery had issues before recent incidences

5 hrs.

Japan's two biggest airlines replaced below-par lithium-ion batteries on their Boeing Co 787 Dreamliners in the months before separate incidents led to the technologically advanced aircraft being grounded worldwide due to battery problems.?

Comments from both All Nippon Airways, the new Boeing jetliner's biggest customer to date, and Japan Airlines Co Ltd point to reliability issues with the batteries long before a battery caught fire on a JAL 787 at Boston's airport and a second battery was badly charred and melted on an ANA domestic flight that was forced into an emergency landing.?

ANA said it changed 10 batteries on its 787s last year, but did not inform accident investigators in the United States because the incidents, including five batteries that had unusually low charges, did not compromise the plane's safety, spokesman Ryosei Nomura said on Wednesday.?

JAL also replaced batteries on the 787 "on a few occasions", said spokeswoman Sze Hunn Yap, declining to be more specific on when units were replaced or whether these were reported to authorities.?

ANA did, however, inform Boeing of the faults that began in May, and returned the batteries to their manufacturer, GS Yuasa Corp. A spokesman for the battery maker declined to comment on Wednesday. Shares of the company fell 1.2 percent.?

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney, speaking on a conference call, said that the company is making progress toward narrowing down the potential cause of the battery incidents. In a separate statement, Boeing said the numerous replacements were not made because of safety concerns.?"Batteries are a replaceable unit on airplanes, regardless of the technology used."?

Little?headway

The New York Times earlier quoted an NTSB spokeswoman as saying the agency would include the "numerous issues" with the 787 battery in its investigations.?

Under aviation inspection rules, airlines are required to perform detailed battery inspections once every two years.?

Officials are carrying out detailed tests on the batteries, chargers and monitoring units in Japan and the United States, but have so far made little headway in finding out what caused the battery failures.?

Japan's transport ministry said the manufacturing process at the company which makes the 787 battery's monitoring unit did not appear to be linked to the problem on the ANA Dreamliner that made the emergency landing.?

The NTSB said on Tuesday it was carrying out a microscopic investigation of the JAL 787 battery. Neither it nor the Japan Transport Safety Board has been able to say when they are likely to complete their work.?

The global fleet of 50 Dreamliners - 17 of which are operated by ANA - remain grounded, increasing the likely financial impact to Boeing, which is still producing the aircraft but has stopped delivering them, and the airlines that fly the Dreamliner.?

Boeing said Wednesday that it expected no significant impact to its earnings from the grounding of the 787s. The airplane maker posted a stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter profit with net income of $978 million, down from $1.39 billion in the same period a year ago, when it had a special gain from taxes.?

Samsung fined $1,000 over fatal gas leak, according to Yonhap News

Samsung given nominal $1000 fine over gas leak, according to Yonhap News

Korea's Yonhap News Agency is reporting that Samsung will be fined a nominal 1 million won (roughly $1,000) for not reporting its recent gas leak quickly enough. The incident led to the death of a maintenance contractor who was brought in to fix a pipe leaking hydrofluoric gas at one of Samsung's semiconductor plants. Police are said to be imposing the fine on both Samsung and its subcontractor for violating a law stipulating that such chemical leaks must be "promptly" reported to the authorities. It appears no official alert was given until the contractor died in hospital. Police say they're continuing to investigate how the fatal accident happened, and that it's clear "someone died due to poor administration," so this isn't the end of the matter -- a fuller report is expected within two weeks.

Bomb explodes south of Beirut

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Lebanese security official says a small bomb has exploded near a car in a Hezbollah stronghold south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

It was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties from the blast in the Hay el-Sellom district or what was being targeted.

The Hezbollah-owned Al Manar TV said two people were wounded in the Monday night explosion.

The security official said the bomb exploded near an office belonging to the Shiite Muslim Amal militia, which is a rival of the militant Hezbollah group. Militiamen in the area opened fire following the blast, causing panic among residents.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Neuroscientists pinpoint location of fear memory in amygdala

Jan. 27, 2013 ? A rustle of undergrowth in the outback: it's a sound that might make an animal or person stop sharply and be still, in the anticipation of a predator. That "freezing" is part of the fear response, a reaction to a stimulus in the environment and part of the brain's determination of whether to be afraid of it.

A neuroscience group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) led by Assistant Professor Bo Li Ph.D., together with collaborator Professor Z. Josh Huang Ph.D., have just released the results of a new study that examines the how fear responses are learned, controlled, and memorized. They show that a particular class of neurons in a subdivision of the amygdala plays an active role in these processes.

Locating fear memory in the amygdala

Previous research had indicated that structures inside the amygdalae, a pair of almond-shaped formations that sit deep within the brain and are known to be involved in emotion and reward-based behavior, may be part of the circuit that controls fear learning and memory. In particular, a region called the central amygdala, or CeA, was thought to be a passive relay for the signals relayed within this circuit.

Li's lab became interested when they observed that neurons in a region of the central amygdala called the lateral subdivision, or CeL, "lit up" in a particular strain of mice while studying this circuit.

"Neuroscientists believed that changes in the strength of the connections onto neurons in the central amygdala must occur for fear memory to be encoded," Li says, "but nobody had been able to actually show this."

This led the team to further probe into the role of these neurons in fear responses and furthermore to ask the question: If the central amygdala stores fear memory, how is that memory trace read out and translated into fear responses?

To examine the behavior of mice undergoing a fear test the team first trained them to respond in a Pavlovian manner to an auditory cue. The mice began to "freeze," a very common fear response, whenever they heard one of the sounds they had been trained to fear.

To study the particular neurons involved, and to understand them in relation to the fear-inducing auditory cue, the CSHL team used a variety of methods. One of these involved delivering a gene that encodes for a light-sensitive protein into the particular neurons Li's group wanted to look at.

By implanting a very thin fiber-optic cable directly into the area containing the photosensitive neurons, the team was able to shine colored laser light with pinpoint accuracy onto the cells, and in this manner activate them. This is a technique known as optogenetics. Any changes in the behavior of the mice in response to the laser were then monitored.

A subset of neurons in the central amygdala controls fear expression

The ability to probe genetically defined groups of neurons was vital because there are two sets of neurons important in fear-learning and memory processes. The difference between them, the team learned, was in their release of message-carrying neurotransmitters into the spaces called synapses between neurons. In one subset of neurons, neurotransmitter release was enhanced; in another it was diminished. If measurements had been taken across the total cell population in the central amygdala, neurotransmitter levels from these two distinct sets of neurons would have been averaged out, and thus would not have been detected.

Li's group found that fear conditioning induced experience-dependent changes in the release of neurotransmitters in excitatory synapses that connect with inhibitory neurons -- neurons that suppress the activity of other neurons -- in the central amygdala. These changes in the strength of neuronal connections are known as synaptic plasticity.

Particularly important in this process, the team discovered, were somatostatin-positive (SOM+) neurons. Somatostatin is a hormone that affects neurotransmitter release. Li and colleagues found that fear-memory formation was impaired when they prevent the activation of SOM+ neurons.

SOM+ neurons are necessary for recall of fear memories, the team also found. Indeed, the activity of these neurons alone proved sufficient to drive fear responses. Thus, instead of being a passive relay for the signals driving fear learning and responses in mice, the team's work demonstrates that the central amygdala is an active component, and is driven by input from the lateral amygdala, to which it is connected.

"We find that the fear memory in the central amygdala can modify the circuit in a way that translates into action -- or what we call the fear response," explains Li.

In the future Li's group will try to obtain a better understanding of how these processes may be altered in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other disorders involving abnormal fear learning. One important goal is to develop pharmacological interventions for such disorders.

Li says more research is needed, but is hopeful that with the discovery of specific cellular markers and techniques such as optogenetics, a breakthrough can be made.

Democrats propose lifting film subsidy cap in NM

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- A fight is brewing between the Democratic-controlled Legislature and Republican Gov. Susana Martinez over whether New Mexico should offer more tax subsidies for film production.

House and Senate Democratic legislative leaders said Monday they're working on measures to boost the economy and create jobs. One proposal is to lift a cap on film tax incentives.

New Mexico provides a 25 percent refund on certain expenditures on film and television projects.

The state will hand out no more than $50 million in tax credits each year under a law enacted in 2011, but a proposal by Sen. Phil Griego, a San Jose Democrat, would eliminate the cap.

"We want to send the word out ... to this industry that New Mexico is open and wanting them to come here to film," Griego said Monday at a news conference with Democratic leaders of the House and Senate.

Republican Gov. Susana Martinez opposes lifting the cap, according to spokesman Enrique Knell.

However, the administration plans to ask the Legislature to change the law to allow film subsidies that go unused under the yearly limit to be carried over to the next year, potentially providing more than $50 million to be available for film companies in some years.

Knell said the state's 25 percent tax subsidy "remains a highly competitive rate and, coupled with all of the other tremendous advantages that New Mexico has for filmmaking, we're continuing to attract productions to our state."

State officials contend that New Mexico is attractive for television and film production because of its weather, diverse landscape and a strong base of film industry crew members.

The Legislature and GOP governor agreed to the $50 million annual limit after Martinez initially proposed reducing the tax rebate rate to 15 percent.

Both Democrats and Republicans are pushing economic development measures in this year's 60-day session. The governor has proposed lowering the corporate income tax rate and establishing a tax credit for small businesses that create jobs.

Democrats said they're considering measures to encourage technology and energy industry jobs. They also said the construction industry will benefit from capital improvement projects that lawmakers expect to finance this year with more than $200 million in available bond financing.

You?re quick.?You?ve?got a great sense of humor. And within an instant you can make even the stodgiest people crack a smile or chuckle. But is it working for you at work?

Experts agree humor in the workplace is typically beneficial?alleviating stress, building morale, and even for career advancement. However,?we?ve?all worked with someone whose sass was actually crass. Sure, the late comedienne Phyllis Dillar was funny? unless you were the butt of her joke.

Answer these questions to find out if your humor is helping or hurting you at work:

  1. ?Are my jokes at someone else?s expense?
  2. Am I self-deprecating?
  3. Would my grandmother be offended?
  4. Would my boss think highly of my humor?
  5. Would I tell the joke to leadership?
  6. Do people take me seriously?
  7. Why am I using humor to engage?

There?aren?t?any right or wrong answers to the questions above. However, if (even for a second) you paused and felt an eerie nausea in your stomach, then it?s time to either ?write some new material? for the workplace, or stop eating at ?Al?s Atomic Taco Emporium? for lunch.

Google Wallet is getting a facelift today with its latest update, bringing a smoother UI and some under the hood improvements as well. The interface now more closely follows the holo UI guidelines, with navigation tabs along the top of the interface and an overflow settings button to hold all extra functions. You're no longer greeted by a list of all available cards, as they are now all housed one more tap away under the "My Wallet" tab with only your default card displayed. There is a button to go directly to "My Offers" from the first page, and new offers can be found from the "Explore" tab on the main page.

The update also brings some nondescript "improvements to the user interface, application stability, and battery life." Although no specifics are listed, these are all good improvements that although aren't as noticeable at first as a new UI make a big difference in the quality of the app.

The Google Wallet app has undergone several visual changes since its launch, and this is probably the best of the bunch. Head to the Play Store and check out the latest update if you have a compatible device, or stick around after the break for a few screenshots of the new UI.

Toyota and BMW make it official, commit to green vehicle technology partnership

Toyota and BMW make it official, commit to green vehicle technology partnership

We're well aware Toyota and BMW are pretty good pals, but details of their ongoing study sessions on green vehicle tech have been vague thus far. The trickle of information continues, and today the companies met to autograph more bits of paper and clasp hands for the camera. New binding agreements were signed to reaffirm deals inked in March and June last year, and their research into next-generation lithium-ion batteries has been expanded to cover the lithium-air kind (hopefully, they are less flammable). Work on making vehicles lighter continues, and they expect to complete development of an inclusive fuel cell system by the distant target of 2020. Expect to see some fruits of BMW and Toyota's labor before then, though, as they intend to "define a joint platform concept for a mid-sized sports vehicle" by the end of the year. Don't get too excited -- we imagine that jargon means we'll be privy to a few bits of artwork and some inspirational words come the deadline. If you'd like to know more about the evolving partnership, check out the source links below.

Akai launches MPC headphone series, we go hands on

Akai launches MPC headphone brand, we go hands on

Headphones, there's plenty to choose from these days that's for sure. But amongst the celebrity endorsed pairs, and the traditional brands there appears to be a gap in the market. Or, so thinks Akai -- the maker of the legendary MPC line of beat-machines -- as it's extending the brand to include three new sets of its own: the MPC Pro, MPC, and MPC Earbuds. Akai claims the new additions are designed for use with the kit of the same name, but looking at the design, we'd wager it's not shy of taking a slice of the more image-conscious / brand aware market either. The daddy of the bunch is the MPC pro (the lower of the two you see above. These come with 50mm drivers and an over-ear design, aimed at improving isolation. The MPC model (the other pair you see above) sport 40mm drivers and an on-ear design. Both the Pro, and regular MPC editions have a metallic red and silver finish, with foldable ear-cups. The baby of the bunch is the Earbuds edition, and these are designed for "active producers," or dare we say, sporty types too. The ear-hook design is reminiscent of other sports headphone buds to keep them in place. These, however, are Bluetooth enabled too. But, if you're worried about the latency while you're producing on the go, there's a connection for going traditionally 3.5mm-cabled too. Hear more past the break.

When we first heard that Akai was venturing into the headphone market, we can't deny we were a little excited. The idea of something specific to the MPC hardware / music production, and potential for MPC-inspired design tickled us. In reality, it's hard not to think that it's more about extending the brand onto another line of products. The samples we saw on the floor were early prototypes, and not final models, so things may change, but the design and the three tiered approach suggests this is as much about market appeal as it is dedicated producer hardware. The metal finish looked well designed and reminded us of the Beats Pro line (a little too much perhaps). They fold in, which is always handy for easy storage, and there is also a mic for when using with your phone. Wearing them was comfortable enough, but with no audio to enjoy, we're unable to sample how they actually sound. So, if that turns out to be a strong point, we can happily take these as the serious producer headphones they claim to be, until then, though, we're reserving final judgement. Price and availability to follow.

Cycling agrees to truth and reconciliation process

LONDON (AP) ? Cycling's governing body agreed Friday to introduce a "truth and reconciliation" commission with the World Anti-Doping Agency, effectively undermining the independent panel investigating the Lance Armstrong scandal.

The UCI established an independent three-person panel to investigate accusations that its leaders covered up suspicious doping tests given by Armstrong during his 1999-2005 run of Tour de France victories and improperly accepted donations from him totaling $125,000.

The panel had demanded earlier Friday that it must be allowed to implement a form of amnesty program that allowed riders and officials to come forward with information on doping without fear of retribution, citing a struggle to persuade witnesses to speak openly.

UCI President Pat McQuaid said the federation would work with WADA to develop the amnesty commission. The UCI said it would update the independent panel on the talks before a second public hearing next Thursday.

"The truth and reconciliation process is the best way that we can examine the culture of doping in cycling in the past, and can clear the air so that cycling can move forward," McQuaid said after the panel's initial hearing.

McQuaid said he will hold talks with WADA President John Fahey this weekend about how the truth and reconciliation process would operate.

The independent panel also wants to broaden its investigation into Armstrong's role as the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on the U.S. Postal Service team, which was exposed in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report last year. Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life, admitted to doping in an interview last week with Oprah Winfrey.

But the UCI rebuffed attempts by the panel to widen the inquiry on Friday, insisting it would be too costly to fund wide-scale investigations.

McQuaid also said since the independent commission was established, "several of our stakeholders have said they won't take part in it. Not just USADA and WADA but others, national federations.

"We feel that because a lot of the allegations which are in the USADA report are made by riders, that those riders, if they come forward to the truth and reconciliation commission, can make those allegations again and the UCI can respond to those allegations within that process," McQuaid said.

McQuaid first revealed he was considering such an amnesty program to The Associated Press in September, but said Friday the plans were only finalized in recent days.

"WADA have indicated that they would share costs with the UCI," McQuaid said Friday. "The WADA code is being reviewed and an amnesty is under discussion within that review. But we're just bringing that aspect forward."

McQuaid said that delaying the hearing was not designed to help its own re-election prospects in September, insisting: "I have nothing to worry about."

"There has been a culture of doping in cycling," he said. "But we hope through this truth and reconciliation commission which we are going to put in place, once it has done its work, we have drawn a line in the sand finally ? and for the last time drawn a line in the sand ? and our sport can move on and be the great sport around the world it should be."

Effectively, the UCI is asking the panel it established to suspend itself. It had been due to hold full hearings in April and report by June.

British judge Philip Otton, who heads the panel, accused the UCI of trying to use the delay in the truth and reconciliation process as "an excuse to kick the USADA allegations into the long grass."

"We're not trying to kill this inquiry. We set you up," UCI lawyer Ian Mill responded later in a heated exchange that led to him being told by Otton: "Please do not raise your voice."

"We are not the bad guys here," Mill said. "We have a finite amount of money available to us ... we are not like a football body."

But the panel fears that the process is being intentionally stalled, complaining about a lack of full disclosure by the UCI.

"It just amazes me that we have had absolutely no documents whatsoever," former British Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson said to the UCI's lawyer. "When are we going to get the .... files?"

But Mil said the "entire process has been derailed" because the panel is demanding a truth and reconciliation process of its own and a widening of its role into the wider doping scandal.

"An amnesty is one thing, getting to the bottom and determining how the USPS team operated without detection or sanction in a reasonable timescale ... causes us considerable anxiety," Mill said.

"That truth and reconciliation process is not capable of being done with the timetable and it may or may not be done under the auspices of this inquiry," Mill said. "We can do something which we understand you don't want to do ... a limited inquiry taking place in April."

HTC outs budget-minded Desire U: ICS on a single-core 1GHz processor

HTC has put penny-pinchers in China and Taiwan square in its sights with its freshly announced Desire U. A price tag is MIA for the Android 4.0-toting and Beats Audio-infused device, but the specs paint a fairly frugal picture for the hardware, which comes in black and white flavors. Behind the handset's 4-inch 800 x 480 (WVGA) display sit a single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot and a 5-megapixel rear-facing shooter. In terms of connectivity, the device supports 3G, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. As of now, there's no word on when it'll hit the streets in China and Taiwan or if a tweaked version with international-friendly radios will make its way to other countries.

Nearly half of children under two years of age receive some vaccinations late

Jan. 21, 2013 ? In a new study published January 21 in JAMA Pediatrics, Kaiser Permanente researchers found that 49 percent of children ages 2-24 months did not receive all recommended vaccinations, or did not get vaccinated according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices schedule.

Kaiser Permanente researchers used the Vaccine Safety Datalink -- a collaborative effort among the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and nine managed care organizations -- to analyze immunization records of 323,247 children born between 2004-2008. Data from immunization records helped illuminate the number of days each child was missing scheduled vaccines for any reason, including parents intentionally choosing not to vaccinate their children according to ACIP recommendations. Children who did not receive their vaccines on time were considered "undervaccinated."

"While a large majority of parents in the U.S. choose to vaccinate their children, a growing number of parents are concerned about vaccine safety and choose to vaccinate their children according to alternative immunization schedules," said lead study author Jason Glanz, PhD, a senior scientist at Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Research. "The medical community doesn't have a lot of data on these alternative schedules, so we are hoping the results from this study will open the door to more opportunities to examine their safety and efficacy."

The study found the number of undervaccinated children increased significantly during the study period, and 1 in 8 undervaccinated children's parents intentionally chose not to adhere to ACIP immunization guidelines. Alternative schedules either involve increasing the time between vaccinations or reducing the number of vaccinations in a single office visit, leaving children undervaccinated. Study findings also indicate undervaccinated children are less likely to visit their doctor's offices and more likely to be admitted to hospitals, compared to their peers vaccinated under the standard schedule.

A relative from the Tianyuan Cave: Humans living 40,000 years ago likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Ancient DNA has revealed that humans living some 40,000 years ago in the area near Beijing were likely related to many present-day Asians and Native Americans.

An international team of researchers including Svante P??bo and Qiaomei Fu of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, sequenced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA that had been extracted from the leg of an early modern human from Tianyuan Cave near Beijing, China. Analyses of this individual's DNA showed that the Tianyuan human shared a common origin with the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans. In addition, the researchers found that the proportion of Neanderthal and Denisovan-DNA in this early modern human is not higher than in people living in this region nowadays.

Humans with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations had not yet been established. Qiaomei Fu, Matthias Meyer and colleagues of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, extracted nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from a 40,000 year old leg bone found in 2003 at the Tianyuan Cave site located outside Beijing. For their study the researchers were using new techniques that can identify ancient genetic material from an archaeological find even when large quantities of DNA from soil bacteria are present.

The researchers then reconstructed a genetic profile of the leg's owner. "This individual lived during an important evolutionary transition when early modern humans, who shared certain features with earlier forms such as Neanderthals, were replacing Neanderthals and Denisovans, who later became extinct," says Svante P??bo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, who led the study.

The genetic profile reveals that this early modern human was related to the ancestors of many present-day Asians and Native Americans but had already diverged genetically from the ancestors of present-day Europeans. In addition, the Tianyuan individual did not carry a larger proportion of Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA than present-day people in the region. "More analyses of additional early modern humans across Eurasia will further refine our understanding of when and how modern humans spread across Europe and Asia," says Svante P??bo.

Parts of the work were carried out in a new laboratory jointly run by the Max Planck Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
