Visit the World?s Best Destination, Bangkok, as Awarded Travel & Leisure & Stay at the Peninsula

Article by Exotissimo Travel

Bangkok. Thailand?s bustling capital and one of the world?s great cosmopolitan cities. It is of no surprise to many, especially to the residents and visitors of the city that Bangkok was recently named the world?s best destination in Travel + Leisure?s 2010 World?s Best Awards readers? survey. Locals and visitors alike will be quick to tell you that the city has everything ranging from glittering temples, historical sites, mega malls, street markets, upscale clubs and bars, restaurants, posh accommodation as well as an extensive public transportation system. There is a reason why Suvarnabhumi Airport is the world?s 9th busiest airport (as of January-March 2010 data).

Bangkok, sometimes known as the City of Angels or the City of Smiles does have modest roots. It was a small village on the west banks of the Chao Phraya River before it was declared the capital by King Rama 1 in 1782. The city quickly grew and spread to the eastern banks of the river and modernized to the mega city we see today.

Many who come to Bangkok end up staying well beyond their original travel plans. Others keep finding excuses to never go back home. There is a sense of warmness (no pun intended) about the city and its people. Whether you are ordering food, shopping for souvenirs at one of the roadside markets one balmy afternoon or seeing an argument taking place, everything seems to be done with a smile.

There is definitely something for everyone here. Shopaholics will savor their time here and spend hours upon hours in the city?s mega malls or outdoor markets. Partygoers can appreciate Bangkok?s never say sleep attitude and party the night away at any of the city?s big clubs or atmospheric bars. Food from all over the world also makes its home in Bangkok. There is even something for the young ones, as an amusement park, water park and safari zoo are all nearby.

Unfortunately though, the city was in the news for all the wrong reasons. The recent political turmoil in March-May 2010 turned ugly when protests turned violent, which left scars in the city and in the minds of the people. But Bangkokians are truly forgiving people, and the city has moved on ahead, almost oblivious to the events that happened just months ago. Matt Leppard, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia was quoted as saying: ?The placement of Bangkok as the World?s Best City is extremely encouraging, given the recent problems. I have to note that the survey was taken before the upheavals started early this year, but the fact that Bangkok has been recognized this year, as it was in 2008, is testament not only to the myriad attractions on offer and the variety of top-drawer hotels, but also to the Thai people and culture. ?

The Peninsula Bangkok was also named as Asia?s best city hotel. It would be hard to argue against this claim. Not only does this immaculate riverside property boast scenic views of the Chao Phaya River and city skyline, the 370 guestrooms and suites are beyond sumptuous, appointed with Thai silk upholstery, ornate woodwork and artwork from some of the continent?s best talents as well as beautiful historical artifacts. There is also an extensive list of facilities, which include a fitness center that would make many sports clubs jealous, indoor and riverside restaurants that can please the most discriminating tastes, the Peninsula Spa and its aromatic Thai healing sessions and the unique three-tiered swimming pool that overlooks the Chao Phaya. The trademark Thai smile is also ever present, as well as the warm and attentive service. Is this a sign of things to come in Bangkok?

If you happen to stay in Thailand?s capital, why not splurge out and give the Peninsula a try? You will not be disappointed. Check it out on Exotissimo?s Peninsula page. This hotel is an excellent complement to our Thailand in Style tour or when you are in Bangkok in any of our Thailand tours.
