Are diet sodas making you fat? (The Week)
New York ? Low-calorie drinks were never a miracle weight-loss drug, but it turns out they may actually be costing you victory in the battle of the bulge
Diet sodas: A sweet-tasting, calorie-free reprieve from the doldrums of boring diets? Apparently, not so much. Diet drinks, it turns out, might actually make you heavier, according to two new studies. Sure, the health benefits of diet drinks have been called into question before, with recent studies linking artificially-sweetened drinks to an increased risk of heart disease. But many guzzlers of diet drinks have long regarded their favorite beverages as health?neutral, since?they lack both calories and fat. Are those dreams now dashed? Here, a brief guide to these new findings:
What did the researchers find?
Regular consumption of diet drinks expands one's waist over time, according to one study at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. A second study supported previously made associations between diet soda and the risk of diabetes. Researchers fed?aspartame (the artificial sweetener in diet sodas) to?diabetes-prone mice, and found that mice on the aspartame diet had higher blood sugar than the mice who didn't consume the chemical.
Forget the mice. How do they know diet soda expands waistlines?
Researchers recorded the height, weight, waist circumference, and diet soda intakes of 474 participants. They then measured again in three follow-up exams over two decades. Diet soda drinkers experienced 70 percent greater increases in waist circumference than non-drinkers. Those who said they were frequent drinkers ? consuming two or more diet sodas a day ? experienced waist circumference increases that were 500 percent greater than those who didn't drink diet soda at all.
How is that possible?
That is still unknown, but researchers?speculate that the artificial sweeteners warp appetite, leaving diet soda drinkers hungry for unhealthy treats.
Does exercise play a role?
Nope. The results were the same?for all diet soda drinkers, even after factors such as exercise, social class, education, and smoking were taken into account.
So, no more diet drinks?
Perhaps diet soda drinkers should consider cutting back. "The fizzy chemical cocktail can still do a number on your health," says Margaret Harmann at Jezebel. "It may be time to rethink your commitment to being comprised of 70 percent Diet Coke." Helen Hazuda, the professor who conducted the study,?stopped drinking diet sodas, saying: "They may be free of calories but not of consequences."

Unpaid tax campaign is criticised
Plumbers are among a number of groups of traders targeted by the HMRC Some 600 plumbers have come clean with thousands of pounds of unpaid tax following a campaign by the tax authority.
Investigations into another 500 who did not come forward have now been launched by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The authority said it was "delighted" with the results, which gathered £328,756 in unpaid tax.
But one tax expert cast doubt on the success of the campaign, claiming it failed to fully engage with traders.
HM Revenue and Customs wrote to 50,000 tradespeople warning them to pay any tax they owed, or face big fines.
It told them to admit to any unpaid tax by the end of May in order to avoid larger penalties.
Those who came forward before the deadline were subject to fines of up to 20% of the tax owed. Investigations made after the deadline could result in 100% penalties and prosecution.
"We are delighted with the outcome of the plumbers campaign," said a HMRC spokesman.
"Significant amounts of previously unpaid tax will now be collected. Next week, acting on behalf of all honest taxpayers, we will follow up by opening investigations into 500 cases with thousands more to follow."
But Gary Ashford, of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), said that the speedy deadline, and a lack of clear advertising to plumbers, had left some in the trade unaware of the campaign.
"The 600 [admissions] is more than nothing, but it could have been a lot more if HMRC had engaged with this group," he said.
"There should have been an education campaign in place ahead of the disclosure campaign."
According to the government, £45bn is lost each year through unpaid taxes in the UK.

World Series of Poker Event #24, $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout (2,000 Max) started with 387 players spread out across 40 tables.? The winner of each table came back for day two, where they broke into ten 4-person tables and the winner of each returned for the final table. In ?the end, it was Canadian Mark Radoja who, by winning just three tables, will take home $436,568 and his first gold bracelet.
The final table has its share of tough competition with Scott Baumstein , Nicolas Fierrogottner, Sean Getzwiller, Jeffrey Gross, Adam Junglen, Nikita Lebedev, Tom Marchese, Mark Radoja, Daniel Smith, and Todd Terry vying for the title and it took eleven hours for Radoja to come out on top.
Dan Smith was the first to exit, his pocket queens bested by Adam Junglen A-K courtesy of a K on the turn.? Smith collected $28,447 for his tenth place finish.? Junglen then dispatched Sean Getzwiller, the only bracelet winner at the final table, in ninth place ($36,669) holding just a lowly pair of deuces to Getzwiller?s As-8s.? The dealer spread out a 6c-Qs-9h flop which didn?t help the all in, but the 6s on the turn gave him 20 outs ? none of which included the Kh which fell on the river. ?But he still has his win in Event #8, the $1,000 NLHE, and the $611,185 to console him.
Former Player of the Year, Tom Marchese was out next, getting it all in preflop with Ad-Qh only to find he was well behind Mark Radoja?s As-Ks.? The board ran out 9s-3d-Kc-4d-Kh and Tom Marchese was sent to the rail in eighth place with $47,636. Todd Terry was next to put his tournament life on the line and he managed to get a call by Junglen; then Radoja came over the top all in and, while Terry probably deflated, Junglen made the call.? Cards revealed it was Terry with Qs9c, Radoja with KhKs, and Junglen with 10d10s.? The board ran out??Ah-Jc-Jd-7d-3d and Radoja knocked out Terry and knocked Junglen back to 2,400,000 while Radoja moved up to 4,100,000.? For his seventh place finish, Terry will collect $62,370.
But Junglen was able to pick up some of his lost chips when he called Nikita Lebedev?s all in of about 1,100,000. ?Cards revealed, the Russian saw that he needed some help as his Qh9h was trailing Junglen?s KsKd.? The flop was Js-Jd-5s, no help, but an 8c on the turn gave him four outs, but instead another 8 on the river knocked out Lebedev sixth place for a $82,287.
After eliminating three of his final tablemates, it was Junglen?s turn to get the boot. ?But it took two hands.? In the first one, Radoja had raised from under the gun and Junglen popped it.? When Radoja went over the top all in, Junglen decided to call and try for another knockout.? But he was behind pocket nines versus pocket queens and he gave Radoja a massive chip lead.? He handed the rest of his chips over to Nicolas Fierrogottner. This time the pocket nines were good enough, but it was his opponent who had them.? Junglen had a weak ace that never improved, and he was out in fifth place with $109,406.?
Jeffrey Gross had sat back, watching the rest of his opponents clear the fireld for him, but he finally got his own knock out. Scott Baumstein shoved from the small blind and was called by Gross in the big.? Baumstein had A-7 to Gross? A-Q.? The flop gave a little to each of them with 7-Q-9, but at least the queen was visible first so Gross knew how grim his chances remained.? When the board ran out 8-K, Gross was on his way out as the fourth place finisher, taking home $146,639.
Chilean Nicolas Fierrogottner missed going heads up when he was Radoja?s next victim.? Radoja had raised from the button, Fierrogottner pushed all in, and Radoja rushed to get his chips in there.? He had A-Q which dominated the Chilean?s A-5. No help for Fierrogottner on the 10-A-4-2-K board and he was out in third place ($198,096), with grateful bloggers everywhere just a little relieved that this was the last time they?d have to type his name.?
Going into heads up play, Radoja had nearly a 3-to-1 chip advantage over Jeffrey Gross.? Gross battled and even managed to close the gap to less than 2-to-1, but he never got any closer to poker gold.? In the end, he was all in with the better hand, A-J versus the K-10 of Radoja, but the flop came Q-10-2 putting Radoja ahead, then the turn put the game out of reach with a third 10.? A useless ace on the river filled out the board and Gross was the second place finisher, taking home $269,742.
The winner was Canadian Mark Radoja, who hails from the same area as much of Canada?s poker elite including Gavin Smith. He collects the first prize of $436,538 as well as the coveted gold bracelet.? Radoja was interviewed after his win and mentioned that this was the first tournament he played this year.? ?First tournament and first win ? so, now I guess I am batting 1,000 ? which is fantastic.???He probably shouldn't mention this to fellow Canadian Daniel Negreanu.

Petal hires new boys hoops coach
PETAL, Miss. (AP) ? Petal High School has hired Kyle Roane as its new boys basketball coach.
The Hattiesburg American reports Roane succeeds Tori Harris, who took the same job at Horn Lake earlier this month.
Roane comes to Petal from Forrest County AHS, where he was serving his second stint as Aggie head coach. Before that, he served as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State, Pearl River and Southern Miss.
Roane also has head coaching experience at Jones Junior College.

Court: Woman can challenge use of terrorism law (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court said Thursday that a jilted woman can challenge the use of an anti-terrorism law to prosecute her for spreading deadly chemicals around the home of her husband's mistress.
The high court, in a unanimous decision, said Carol Anne Bond can challenge her conviction despite arguments from federal prosecutors and judges that she shouldn't even be allowed to appeal the verdict that has left her in federal prison since 2007.
Bond was convicted of trying to poison her husband's pregnant lover by spreading toxic chemicals around the woman's house and car and on her mailbox. Federal prosecutors then sent her to prison using a federal anti-terrorism law for using "chemical weapons."
Bond, from Lansdale, Pa., almost 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia, challenged her conviction on 10th Amendment grounds, saying that the federal government's decision to charge her under a chemical weapons law was an unconstitutional reach into a state's power to handle what her lawyer calls a domestic dispute.
But the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia threw out her appeal, saying that only states ? not individuals ? can use 10th Amendment arguments that the federal government cannot encroach into matters reserved for the states.
The high court decision overturned that ruling, allowing her to go back and challenge use of the terrorism law.
"The individual, in a proper case, can assert injury from governmental action taken in excess of the authority that federalism defines. Her rights in this regard do not belong to a state," said Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the opinion for the court.
Lawyer Robert E. Goldman hopes to reach his imprisoned client Thursday to share the good news. "It vindicates an individual's rights to challenge the federal government when it oversteps its powers," Goldman told The Associated Press.
Bond, unable to bear any children of her own, was excited for her best friend Myrlina Haynes when the woman announced her pregnancy. But later the excitement turned to pain when Bond found out that her husband of more than 14 years, Clifford Bond, was the one who had impregnated Haynes.
Vowing revenge, Bond, a laboratory technician, stole the chemical 10-chloro-10H phenoxarsine from the company where she worked and purchased potassium dichromate on Amazon.com. Both can be deadly if ingested or exposed to the skin at sufficiently high levels.
Bond spread the chemicals on Haynes' door handle and in the tailpipe of Haynes' car. Haynes, noticing the chemicals and suffering a minor burn, called the local police, who didn't investigate to her satisfaction. She then found some of the chemicals on her mailbox, and called the United States Postal Service, which videotaped Bond going back and forth between Haynes' car and the mailbox with the chemicals.
Postal inspectors arrested her.
But instead of turning the domestic dispute case over to state prosecutors, a federal grand jury indicted her on two counts of possessing and using a chemical weapon using a federal anti-terrorism law passed to fulfill the United States' international treaty obligations under the 1993 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction.
Bond pleaded guilty and was given six years in prison.
The case is Bond v. United States, 09-1227.

The Burning Question - How Can I Make Money?
As the world economy is in such crisis, so many people are looking for ways to make money these days, and countless millions of websites have been built offering lots of advice and information. There are many so-called get rich schemes that promise riches at the click of a button.
Many of those websites are designed to influence you to pay money to have such a solution, and instead of making money, you can spend your money and still not have the right way for you to proceed!
No matter how you phrase your wording in major search engines, you can soon become overwhelmed at the amount of ways that there are to make money, but how many people are prepared to read through those millions of results just so that they can perhaps find an answer that they can work with? Most often, people soon become tired and lose heart because there is too much information.
Throughout my life time, I have watched as many people have created and built a business, and of course some have failed in the attempt, but others have become very successful. I have also had the opportunity to gather valuable information from some of those people, and one particular piece of advice has stuck in my mind. This simple answer to the burning question is more common sense than most people care to accept.
Do something that you know!
Well, perhaps ego can prevent most people from accepting that this simple answer to such a big question can possible be the right one. There must be another answer to the burning question, but quite frankly, there isn't!
You can gamble in the hope of making money, but what would be the percentage of winners as opposed to the losers? So that can't be the answer at all! You can open a shop selling a wide variety of goods, but do you know exactly how to do it, and have you thought about the competition, and done the all important market research? If that is your gift, and if you are equipped with all of the knowledge that you would require, and if you actually enjoy the challenge and have the finance to start such a venture, then go ahead. Otherwise, the tiny answer to the burning question would seem to be a better way to start.
If you can't find a job or you don't have the capital to start your own business in the main stream, then it is time to look within your own capabilities and find the one thing that you like to do and know the most about.
Choose something that you know. It doesn't matter what it is because the world is full of those something's. Wherever you look, there are other peoples something's, and all you need is one of your own!
Searching for ideas on the internet is fine, and you can find some great information that can help you to decide just what it is that you are good at, or perhaps you will be reminded of a topic that you know a lot about. This is a good place to start. If you have writing skills, then go ahead and begin to write about things that you know. If you can paint or draw, then that too is another way to begin to make money.
There are countless ways to make money, and all you need to do is choose the one that you know the most about and would enjoy doing, then fire into action and keep on going until you start to make money. The harder you work and the more dedicated you are, will determine just how fast you do make money. Once you have decided what it is that you know enough about to begin, you can then gather more information about it from the internet, and before too long, you will be heading towards making your first dollar. Once you start to make money, then simply repeat the process and keep going.
One of the greatest obstacles to making money is procrastination. Once you overcome that, you can do just about anything that you set your mind to.
Another burning question is, will you take this tiny piece of advice and do something that you know? I hope you do, and that you soon begin to make money!
There are so many ways to make extra money working from home, and I have spent many years looking for those that most people can do for little or no cash outlay.
Over the years, I have tried many ways to master website and blog site building. I eventually found that WordPress is the best format for me, and I have studied hard to learn how to use the many fine themes and plugin's that are available.

It is almost impossible to know when the tumor first started growing, so by the time cancer is diagnosed the patient may have had cancer for a few years. And cancer is different for every one!! I really can?t stress this enough. I know others who have lung cancer, we get the same chemo, have the same radiation and see the same doctors, but each of reacts differently to treatment. My cancer went from the left lung to the right lung and then to the spine. In another patient it went from the lungs to the brain, and for yet another patient I know the cancer went from the lung to the bone in his leg. The tumor growth is different for each of us and the formation of new tumors is different for each of us. All this makes it very difficult to predict the course of the disease. The person above me who said ?ask your doctor? is obviously very immature and has no business trying to answer question in a serious forum.

US seeks China's help in Sudan as alarm grows (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration on Thursday asked China to use its influence with Sudan's president to press for an end to rising violence that threatens a landmark peace deal and could complicate southern Sudan's planned declaration of independence next month.
U.S. officials said they want China to urge Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to abide by the terms of a 2005 peace agreement that ended Sudan's two-decade north-south civil war and led to a secession vote by the south. Later this month, ahead of southern Sudan's July 9 independence, Bashir is to visit China, which has pull with Bashir's regime in Khartoum because of major investments there.
"We hope that Beijing takes this opportunity to reaffirm the importance of stopping the violence, of getting back to the (peace agreement), and of full accountability for past issues," State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland told reporters.
China has been criticized in the past for either ignoring the deteriorating situation in Sudan or not doing enough to press Khartoum to abide by its commitment to the peace deal so as not to endanger its substantial interests in the country.
Sudan is China's third-largest trading partner in Africa and China is uniquely positioned to exert influence over the north-south conflict, given its efforts to maintain friendly ties with the southern region to protect Chinese oil investments while remaining a key political ally of Sudan's government in the north.
"China shares our interest in peace in Sudan," Nuland said. "So it is our hope that, in welcoming Bashir, they are going to make the same points that the international community have been making to both sides, frankly."
She acknowledged that China may believe its economic and commercial interests have more importance but noted wryly that "it's hard to have money and oil when there's no peace."
Her comments came as President Barack Obama met with his special envoy to Sudan, Princeton Lyman, two days after expressing grave concern about the situation in an audio message to the Sudanese people and urging northern and southern leaders "to show the courage and vision that true leadership demands" and "to choose peace."
In his meeting with Lyman, the White House said Obama "expressed deep concern over the violence and the lack of humanitarian access, and he underscored the urgent need to get back to cooperative negotiations" fully implement the 2005 accord, including resolution of the status of disputed regions of Abyei and South Kordofan.
New fighting was reported on Wednesday in Abyei, the latest in a series of clashes that have occurred since the north's military invaded the region in May. And, aid workers and a U.N. report said fighting has erupted in South Kordofan, leaving at least 25 people dead.
On Tuesday, Lyman and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, meeting with African Union negotiators trying to forge a deal between the north and south governments that would see Ethiopian peacekeepers deployed to Abyei. An agreement in principle has been reached, but a final deal has proven elusive.
Nuland said the U.S. was optimistic that an agreement on a ceasefire and peacekeepers could be done but stressed that the situation was fluid and still developing.
The White House said Lyman would be returning to the region this month to continue his efforts.
Meanwhile, the Enough Project, an advocacy group, called for the U.S. to provide air defense systems to southern Sudan to help the region protect itself and deter escalating violence in the north-south border region, where the north has attacked on multiple fronts.
"War has resumed in Sudan due to the offensive military operations launched by Khartoum," said the Enough Project's John Prendergast, who contended that a U.S. policy of rewards for Khartoum has failed. "President Obama should deploy immediate consequences for Khartoum's escalation and in the absence of international support to protect civilians provide support to south Sudan to deter further air attacks."
Prendergast's group said that former President George W. Bush in 2008 approved a request from southern Sudan to provide air defense capabilities but that the request was never fulfilled. The group said a "rigorous vetting" of southern military units for human rights concerns should be a precondition for providing anti-aircraft weaponry, and that use of the weapons should be closely monitored.

Cuban will pick up tab for Mavs' victory parade
DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks returned home in triumph on Monday, cheered by hundreds of fans celebrating the franchise's first NBA title and the first professional championship of any kind in the area in more than a decade.
Owner Mark Cuban walked off the plane at Love Field carrying the championship trophy he was handed after Sunday's Game 6 win over the Miami Heat.
Next came forward Dirk Nowitzki with hardware of his own: The NBA finals MVP trophy that was awarded after he overcame a finger injury, illness and smothering defense from the Heat to power fourth-quarter comeback wins.
Cuban, the Dallas billionaire who bought the team in 2000, had the championship trophy in a seat next to him on the plane and he apparently kept it close throughout the Sunday night celebration.
"This will sound weird," he wrote on Twitter. "I'm laying in bed. With the trophy next (to) me."
Cuban will keep the party going at least through Thursday morning, the date set for the team's victory parade through the streets of downtown Dallas.
Team spokeswoman Sarah Melton confirmed the date Monday, but said the precise route and other details would be announced Tuesday. Cuban has said that he will pick up the tab for the city's parade costs.
The championship, the first in the 31-year history of the Mavericks, represents a breakthrough. The franchise was once one of the worst in the NBA and, even after Cuban's infusion of cash and energy, had a reputation of failing to win big games - including a loss to Miami in the 2006 Finals after leading the series 2-0.
The title is city's first since the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 and it comes four months after the Super Bowl in suburban Arlington included not the hometown Cowboys but Green Bay and Pittsburgh along with a spate of bad weather. The Texas Rangers advanced to the last World Series, but lost to San Francisco.
As the Mavericks wore down the Heat, fans crowded into downtown Dallas on Sunday night to celebrate. Police reported 14 arrests, including six for public intoxication, four for disorderly conduct and four people taken into custody on outstanding warrants.
By Monday, attention had turned to the homecoming.
The team charter passed under a water cannon salute after it landed. Cuban, a cigar in his mouth, walked off first, followed by Nowitzki, both holding the trophies high. They then went across the runway to a security fence, touching off a celebration that lasted about 30 minutes and allowing fans who spent hours waiting in 90-degree heat to get a taste of the title.
Cuban eventually handed off the championship trophy to members of the team, who walked along the fence as fans held cell phones high to take photos. As Nowitzki was driven away, he held the MVP trophy aloft through the sun roof of his sport utility vehicle.

Dos Santos? vicious attack locks up title shot and leaves Carwin?s nose broken
There's no further debate needed about who gets the first shot at UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Junior dos Santos picked apart Shane Carwin, broke his nose and left the behemoth looking like he was hit by a truck. The Brazilian rolled to a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, in the main event at UFC 131 in Vancouver.
Dos Santos gets a shot at Velasquez., who's been sidelined since last October recovering from shoulder surgery. The champ has talked about returning in the fall with an eye on the UFC event scheduled for Houston in October.
Saturday night belonged to dos Santos though as the Brazilian handled Carwin at nearly every turn.
"My quickness and agility were the differences tonight. I had a longer reach and heavy hands. Shane was a great opponent, but tonight I proved that I'm ready for the title shot," dos Santos said.
One has to wonder if Velasquez can even successfully defend the title one time with how good dos Santos looked. Dos Santos (13-1, 7-0 UFC) gets better with each fight. Carwin tried to use his wrestling to slow him down but had no success. On the feet, JDS used a quick jab to set up overhand rights and left hooks. He also mixed in some great body shots.
This was a long journey for Dos Santos, who hasn't fought since last August. After his win at UFC 117 over Roy Nelson, JDS was expected to get the first shot at Velasquez. Then the champ went down with the shoulder injury and dos Santos was slotted into the UFC's reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" to coach against Brock Lesnar. The coaches were scheduled to square off at UFC 131.
Earlier this year, the heavyweight contenders spent six weeks in Las Vegas taping the reality show. Last month, Dos Santos found out that Lesnar was backing out of the fight due to complications with his diverticulitis. Lesnar had surgery to remove 12 inches of his colon and is hoping to return at the start of 2012. When he comes back, the division is going to be stacked at the top.
In this clash of big men, Carwin (12-2, 4-2 UFC) almost appeared hopeless after the first round. Moving in and out of the pocket, Dos Santos was too fast for the 255-pound monster. JDS outstruck Carwin 88-20.
With 50 seconds left in the first, JDS caught Carwin with a 1-2 that floored him. Carwin fell to his knees and tried to cover up, but the onslaught from dos Santos was relentless. Somewhere in the hailstorm of punches, Carwin had his nose broken. Referee Herb Dean showed patience by allowing Carwin to fight on. He survived, but when he rose to his feet, the nose was flattened, his left eye was bruised and there was blood all over his face.
Dos Santos' confidence grew as the fight went along. The pummeling continued in the second and third rounds. He landed most of his jabs and held his hands low. Carwin tried to throw back, but too often he was left punching at the air.
In the third, Carwin, a former NCAA Div. II wrestling champ, finally scored a takedown, but he couldn't keep JDS on the ground. It had to break his spirit when dos Santos got back to his feet in less than 15 seconds. In the final two minutes, Dos Santos even landed two huge takedowns of his own to put an exclamation point on the victory.
Carwin admitted that after a year off to recover from back surgery and work on his conditioning, his game had slipped.
"I gotta get my timing back when it comes to boxing. It was a really tough fight to come back to. Junior is a (freakin') tough dude and he was strong. I've got some holes to fix in my wrestling in order to get back to where I need to be," Carwin said.
JDS' wrestling in the final round may have been a subtle message to the champ. Velasquez is an outstanding wrestler, but if he can't get dos Santos off his feet, he's in for a helluva battle.
