Clearwater, Florida --?Morton Plant Mease is recognizing Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with free prostate screenings and health seminars throughout the month of September.
Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men, and one out of every six males will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
?Screenings can be highly effective in the early detection of prostate cancer, said Scott Klavans, MD, Morton Plant Mease urologist, in a release. ?There can be as much as a 40 percent decrease in the death rate if prostate cancer is caught early through screenings. If it is detected early enough and with the advanced treatments available now, prostate cancer patients can experience a good recovery and continue to live a full and active life.?
To help promote early detection of prostate cancer, many free screenings including digital rectal exams (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests will be offered on Friday, Sept. 7, from 1:30 ? 4 p.m. at the following locations:
