Janier Ferguson?s future on Coosa High School?s football team could be in jeopardy following his arrest Tuesday on drug charges. The 18-year-old senior running back was charged with two counts of felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, two counts of misdemeanor possession of marijuana of less than an ounce and one count of felony sale of marijuana.
Ferguson was released from the Floyd County Jail on Wed?nes?day afternoon on $15,000 bond.
Coosa High School Principal Trevor Hubbard said he had no comment concerning the situation, and Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent of Floyd County Schools, said that he could not talk about particular students but referred to the Extracurricular Code of Conduct for Floyd County Schools.
The code explains that any students arrested for, or charged with, a felony will be automatically suspended from extracurricular activities and remain so ?until the matter is resolved in favor of the student.?
?Participating in extracurricular activities is a privilege students have at all of our schools,? Hensley said.
All Floyd County Schools student-athletes and their parent or guardian must sign the code of conduct to show that they have read and understand the rules.
Hensley said that the school cannot discipline a student who has been arrested until they return to classes. The proper procedure will then be followed according to the legal situation.
In Ferguson?s case, he allegedly sold marijuana to a cooperating witness on Aug. 14 and Aug. 22 along Turner McCall Boulevard.
The Extracurricular Code of Conduct for Floyd County Schools notes that the use, possession and distribution of illegal drugs is an infraction that results in the maximum penalty, which for a first offense is suspension for all of the current season or school year for athletics or performing groups.
When asked twice whether Ferguson would still be on the football team if and when he returned to school, Coosa head football coach Chad Perry declined to comment.
He said that his staff and players had turned their attention to Friday night?s season-opening contest against Gordon Central in Calhoun.
?We?ve got mostly a new squad on the field this year, and it will be interesting to see how the guys respond when the lights come on and the games start counting,? Perry said.
The 2011 Rome News-Tribune Co-Player of the Year, Ferguson had started practicing with the Coosa team just last week after completing his academic eligibility requirements following a change in residency during the summer.
He had played the previous season at Pepperell High School, where he rushed for 2,063 yards on 300 carries and scored 26 touchdowns.
