HOUSTON ? An east Houston priest had to duck for cover Thursday during a shootout in his church?s parking lot.
Father Jim Hamilton said he heard a raucous outside St. Timothy?s church on Indianapolis street.
When he walked out to see what was going on, bullets were flying.
"When the shooting started, I got behind one of the pillars," Fr. Hamilton said.
Fr. Hamilton says he heard as many as 40 gunshots coming from two different groups.
Amazingly, no one was hurt.
It?s not the first time a shootout has broken out near the church. The same thing happened about a year ago.
Back then, police stepped up patrols and things quieted down.
But neighbors say trouble is brewing again.
Fr. Hamilton said the groups often gather in Greenwood Park across the street from the church. That?s where the fights begin.
Now gunfire has become part of life in the East Houston neighborhood.
"When I heard gunshots, I didn?t even get up to see what it was," one elderly neighbor said.
She?s so used to hearing gunshots, she didn?t call 911.
Houston Police Lieutenant Duke Atkins says people must call 911 whenever they hear shots being fired.
Atkins says the number of calls directly impacts the number of patrols assigned to troubled areas.
For now, HPD says it is sending out an alert asking officers to spend extra time in the area whenever possible.
Father Hamilton says he?ll continue praying things quiet down soon.
