It seems like you?re being taken on a video tour of an office until the surprise ending (see video above). Although it looks ultra-real, this whimsical animation, created by architect and visualiser Erik Jansson is completely computer-generated. It was produced using a combination of open-source and commercially available 3D software, using imagery created for a previous architectural design. ?It only really came together when I found this piece of music that seemed like a nice fit,? says Jansson.
In movies like Avatar, ultra-realistic scenes are produced using bespoke CGI techniques. But modern software and powerful desktop computers are increasingly enabling lone artists to create computer-generated scenes that rival Hollywood. Gareth Edwards? 2010 alien film Monsters, for example, featured CGI creatures created with off-the-shelf software available to anyone with even a modest production budget.
Last year, a kitchen advert for Silestone wowed viewers when it was revealed that there was no real footage used. In this case, the extreme realism is down to the talent of graphic designer Alex Roman. He uses visual tricks such as reducing the depth of focus to emphasise details and make objects look lifelike. So artistic aptitude can help distinguish a top animation from a mediocre one ? rather than just the technology used.
